Also spelled "cardamom", this is a spice predominant in India and Southeastern Asia. The pods are superbly aromatic, and you'll find them most often in curries. This black variety is distinctly smoky with hints of mint-like flavor. Use sparingly and build up the flavor, as it can be quite overpowering.
